Paper Introduction: WHAT IS GOING ON POLITICALLY IN CALIFORNIA?
1. Major social problems in California
California is experiencing a greater growth that it ever has, as compared to 1995 when it was the fastest-shrinking area in the nation. “Fueled by immigration, young migrants from other states, and new jobs in a reinvented regional economy, [Los Angeles County) has roared back to become the fastest-growing US county” (Wood, 2000, 2). The same situation holds true throughout most of the state.
With this growth, however, comes a new host of social problems all connected with growth. The main social problems (based on the number of initiatives on the recent ballot include)

The remainderwas about one-third Hispanic, 1 percent Asian and 7 percent Black. The same situation holdstrue throughout most of the state. This has also created a schism among the whites who can be dividedinto two categories, Puritans and Quakers. Major social problems in California California is experiencing a greater growth that it ever has, ascompared to 1995 when it was the fastest-shrinking area in the nation."Fueled by immigration, young migrants from other states, and new jobs in areinvented regional economy, [Los Angeles County) has roared back to becomethe fastest-growing US county" (Wood, 2 , 2). In this period, theWhite proportion fell from 85 percent to 64 percent" (Maharidge, 1999, B7). "The state was 51 percent White in 1998. With this growth, however, comes a new host of social problems allconnected with growth. By2 1, officially less than 5 percent of the population will be White. The main social problems (based on the number ofinitiatives on the recent ballot include) * Education (23 initiatives ranging from school construction to school safety) * Health (15 initiatives ranging from health insurance to HMO challenges.) * Taxes (12 initiatives ranging from decreasing to cessation to taxing Internet businesses) * Crime (9 initiatives, all calling for tougher laws and for punishment of offenders) * Environment (5 initiatives concerning safe air and haz mat conditions. The division among these groups can be seen by the above initiatives,which are reasonably divided between making things better for all (theQuakers) and making things worse for all (the Puritans.)3. Liberals, who hope California willserve as the blueprint for a new society, find it encouraging" (Maharidge,1999, B7). The Puritans see the ethnicgrowth of the state as being basically against American values and aretending to leave the state, while the Quakers are staying. Exitpolls showed that Hispanic Americans made up about 13 percent ofCalifornia's voters in 1998, up from 6 percent in 199 . | || | | | | | | | |Related || | |Median | All persons in |Children,age -17|Children|| | |Houshold | | | || | |Income 1993 | poverty,1993 |poverty,1993 |5-17pov.|| | |Income 1993 | Number | |Number | |Number ||United States |31,241 | |39,264,811 | |15,727,492 | |9,814,13|| | | | | | | |3 ||California |34,128 | | 5,428,276 | | 2,331, 91 | |1,381,83|| | | | | | | |3 ||Alameda | |4 ,324 | | 16 ,618 | | 61,698 | |35,244 ||El Dorado County|38,18 | | 2,4 6 | | 4,747 | |2,823 ||Fresno County |27,613 | | 2 6,784 | | 1 1,932 | |62,629 ||Imperial County |2 ,2 7 | | 38, 6 | | 15,453 | |1 ,388 ||Los Angeles |32,689 | | 2,164,629 | | 94 ,152 | |551,752 ||County | | | | | | | ||Mendocino County|27,5 4 | | 13,756 | | 5,823 | |3,623 ||Napa County |38,879 | | 1 ,335 | | 3,683 | |2,196 || | | | | | | | | |(Source: Stat Abs) The figures today are stronger, showing more people living under thepoverty level throughout California, although the growth of these povertypockets do not keep California from still being listed as the # 1 economyin the United States.[pic][pic](Source: Stat Abs) References Maharidge, D.
