Paper Abstract: Compares several approaches. Public Service Ads aimed at young people. PSA scare tactics. "Just Say No" campaign. Rising problem of drug and alcohol abuse among students. Issue of changing harmful behavior to good behavior. Dealing with peer pressure. Cites inconsistency between government's and TV industry's War Against Drugs. PSA messages versus alcoholic beverage commercials. Paper Introduction: Various groups in recent years have produced public service announcements to be run on television or in print-ad versions to encourage young people not to experiment with drugs. However, according to the CDC's Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System's report for 1997, nationwide 47.1 percent of students have used marijuana and one in ten of these students tried marijuana before they were thirteen year old. 8.2 percent had used some form of cocaine, 1.1 percent before their thirteenth birthday (Kann et al., 1998, 1). Drug initiation experiences can happen at a very young age are public service ads targeted at youth an effective detriment to drug use? These advertisements are costly, and their effectiveness is often questioned.
