Oil wrestling is accompanied by a large fairfeaturing music and celebrations, where people eat roast lamb to theaccompaniment of belly dancing and traditional drum and flute music(Sansal). Noting the proximity ofGreece and Turkey, it is easy to see how these countries-both in theMediterranean region and just across the Mediterranean Sea from each other, nearly side by side, could have influenced each other's cultures. Turkish oil wrestling is an excellent example of how geography canexert an influence on a nation's culture. "Turkish Oil Wrestling." All About Turkey. Works Cited"Turk Fight Series." 2 8. The fact that ancient Greece's oil wrestling and modern Turkey's oilwrestling have many similarities indicates that the opposite is true.Despite many centuries and a number of miles separating them, theirwrestling retains sufficient like characteristics as to be identifiablyfrom a common origin. Likewise, proximity encouraged differentMediterranean cultures to copy from one another. The main differences are minor, suchas the number of falls and the wearing of wrestling pants in the modernTurkish sport (Miller). Miller suggests that the wearing of pants may havebeen the result of contact with non-Greek Asiatic cultures, which foundpublic nudity disgusting. "Submission Fighting and the Rules of Ancient Greek Wrestling." May 2 4. Thediffusion of oil wrestling from Greece to Turkey most likely occurredduring trade or other contact between the two countries. Oil wrestling in Turkey dates back to the Persian Era, when in1 65 B.C., the legendary wrestler Rostam engaged in it to "[save] hiscountry from the evil forces" (Sansal). Turkish Oil Wrestling Modern-day Turkish oil wrestling is a sports spectacle that drawsapproximately a thousand barefoot wrestlers covered in olive oil andstripped to the waist, wearing pants of water buffalo leather (Sansal;"Turk Fight Series"). The rules, even today are surprisingly similar, witha hand signal being used to signal defeat just as it did in the AncientGreek version of the sport (Miller). Miller, Christopher. Forty Springs Video. The culturallandscape of the countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea has beencharacterized by similarities that might be due to climate and theirproximity to one another, as well as facilitated by the ease of travel viathe Mediterranean Sea. The sunny Mediterranean climate made travel easier,as the heavy snowfalls typical in Europe and monsoons typical in East Asiancountries do not occur there. Had Greece and Turkeybeen located as far as apart as Europe and China, distance decay would havebeen far more acute between the countries, and they would probably havelittle or nothing in common culturally. Sansal, Burak. The"'true' Greek wrestling was something done naked and oiled," however, rather than in Buffalo leather pants (Miller 4). Modern Turkish oil wrestling, however, is most likely a modernvariation of the oil wrestling that occurred in ancient Greece. Turkey's and Greece's wrestlingtraditions indicate close cultural ties and a longstanding mutualinfluence.
