As the economy begins to recover, the Taiwanese advertising market isseeing the benefit. As in the United States, there are some restrictionson alcohol and tobacco advertising on television, as well as restrictionson some other types of advertising ("Doing Business," 2 8). A ban on Chinese brands and products being advertised inTaiwan media is being lifted, which is seen as a boon for Taiwanadvertising agencies. Similar to ads in the West, attractive young women in fashionableclothing are often used in advertising; however, the nude nurses facedprotests both because nurses found it demeaning to their profession, andbecause the medical industry is considered to have different rules thantraditional businesses ("Taiwan clinic," 2 9). (2 9, May 13). Controversy can also find Taiwanese advertising as a medical clinicdiscovered recently when it used nude pictures of two nurses in billboardads. Thisresearch considers the issues surrounding advertising in Taiwan, includingcommon media outlets and approaches to the role of advertising in Taiwanesebusiness. A number of international advertisingagencies have a presence in Taiwan, and the advertising industry isrecovering from the recent economic downturn. Advertising in Taiwan Introduction Taiwan is one of the Asian "tiger" economies and boasts strongcapitalist traditions. 4 . With so many media outlets in a country where familiarity with Westernbusiness and business practices is high, it is not surprising thatadvertising agencies have established offices in Taiwan. Majorinternational advertising agencies with a presence in Taiwan include LeoBurnett, Ogilvy and Mather, Dentsu, and McCann Erickson. Thisis expected to help boost the performance of the Taiwanese advertisingindustry (Smith, 2 9). Conclusion Advertising in Taiwan follows much the same model as advertising inEurope and the United States. Advertising istypically placed in trade journals, newspapers, magazines, on televisionand on the Internet. Increasingly, Taiwan is looking to China to provide advertisingopportunities. With increased air traffic between the mainland andTaiwan, it also makes it easier for mainland Chinese companies to useTaiwan for advertising and to oversee the creative process in Taiwan. (2 9, October 12). (2 9, February 9). ReferencesDoing business in Taiwan: 2 9 Country Commercial Guide for US Companies. Businesspeople in Taiwan are familiar with theWestern style of capitalism, including advertising and promotion, andadvertising follows a similar model to that in the west. (2 8). There arethousands of magazine publishers, 24-hour news channels, several hundredradio stations and hundreds of newspaper publishers. Analysis Taiwan has not been immune to the economic crisis that has engulfedthe rest of the world recently, and there were signs of a slowdown inTaiwan as early as the beginning of 2 7. Overall, advertising in Taiwan is more similar thandifferent to Western advertising. Advertising is a part of the economy in Taiwan, with some similarities-and many differences-to Western advertising. Despite the turmoil in the political arena, the advertising sectorcontinued to be strong. There is a high levelof Internet access, as well, with more than 7 percent of households havingat least one Internet connection in 2 7 ("World Media," 2 7). Some restrictions remain, however, including restrictions on tobacco and alcohol advertising onTaiwanese television, but a ban has been lifted on mainland Chineseproducts and brands. (2 7, March 3 ). Food and beveragecompanies, real estate interests, telecommunications and householdentertainment companies are likely to be among the largest spenders onadvertisers in coming years, as well (Liu, 2 9). GDP had continued to increase inTaiwan, but at a decreasing rate compared to previous years, and protestswere common as the president endured a personal scandal that became apolitical scandal that eventually enveloped his son-in-law, the president'swife and senior aides ("World Media," 2 7).
