Despite an alert issued bythe Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii, residents had only 1 minutesto prepare before the tsunami hit, due to the speed of the waves. The earthquake and resulting tsunami killed atleast 15 people in the South Pacific, according to a report the next dayby CBS ("Death Toll..."). 3 Nov. 2 9. Four tsunami waves that reached 5 to 6 meters high pushed wateras much as a mile inland. In American Samoa, at least 3 people were killed, according to theisland's governor, Togiola Tulafono. Red crossworkers helped thousands who were left homeless and the United Sates,Australia, and New Zealand responded with supplies and monetary aid ("DeathToll..."). According to Samoan Minister Tuilaepa Sailele, whose village, Lesa,was destroyed by the waves, within 1 minutes, entire villages were wipedout. According to scientists, the earthquake that led to the tsunami wascaused by a shallow rupture in the earth's crust. 2 9. A rule of thumb is that earthquakes of magnitude greater than 6.5 maygenerate tsunamis, however, this can vary, and often there are a lot offalse reports (Osborne). 2 9. There is currently no single model that canpredict the occurrence of earthquakes and resultant tsunamis, but researchis being conducted to develop a model that can estimate the size of anexpected tsunami (Osborne). On the island of Tonga, nine peoplewere reported dead on the northern island of Niuas. Gary Gibson, a seniorseismologist at Environmental Systems and Services in Melbourne said that,based on its severity, the earthquake is likely to have been 2 to 3 kilometers long and 1 to 2 miles deep, with the sides of the faultmoving about four to seven meters relative to each other (Osborne).
