Paper Introduction:
Critique of an Archaeological Article The article I am critiquing is Petra located on the Internet athttp www raingod com angus Gallery Photos MiddleEast Jordan Petra Atfirst look this appears to be a scholarly article on Petra from anarchaeological standpoint including history of the site and a descriptionof the location and its topography The point of the site is to providehistorical geographical archaeological information on Petra to the average non-scientific reader The kinds of information provided to support thisinclude a description of

Text of the Paper:
The entire text of the paper is shown below. However, the text is somewhat scrambled. We want to give you as much information as we possibly can about our papers and essays, but we cannot give them away for free. In the text below you will find that while disordered, many of the phrases are essentially intact. From this text you will be able to get a solid sense of the writing style, the concepts addressed, and the sources used in the research paper.

After reading the first page, the reader simply clicks to getto the next until all have been read. Apparently McIntyre traveled to Petra, which is how heobtained the photos, and he seems to have a strong background inarchaeology that enables him to write effectively and accurately on thetopic. http://www.lifeinthefastlane.ca/lost-ancient-city-of-petra/offbeat- news First, it consists of multiple pagesthat are accessible by hot links, so that the information reads similarlyto a book. However, since the site is not based on peer-reviewed articles orother substantiated data, I would not consider it appropriate except togain background knowledge on Petra. It is part of a personal website, raingod.com, belonging to Angus McIntyre, and the site has not beenupdated since 1997. What I learned from this exercise was that Internet sites I am goingto use for research purposes need to be explored to see where theirinformation comes from, how qualified the individual writing them is toprovide authoritative information, and whether the information may havebeen copied from elsewhere on the Internet or copied by other sites. Other strengths of the site include theinclusion of excellent photos of various features in Petra and the readablebut informative text that accompanies them. Although the information on the site accords with existing informationon Petra, it is not an authoritative site. Atfirst look, this appears to be a scholarly article on Petra from anarchaeological standpoint, including history of the site and a descriptionof the location and its topography. My remaining question iswhether McIntyre consulted any authoritative sources in writing the textfor his site; if so, they are not referenced on the site. For example, McIntyre's 1997 site states, "Crusaders constructeda fort there in the 12th century, but soon withdrew...." Another sitedated 2 8 has an article entitled "Lost Ancient city of Petra" whichstates, "The Crusaders constructed a fort there in the 12th century butsoon withdrew," and other sites athttp://www.nilevalleytours.com/dayTours.html andhttp://www.seejordan.org/jtb/major_attractions_petra.html also contain theexact same sentence. This is a well-organized format forpresenting the information. There is also some indication that theinformation on the site was later copied for use on other sites on theInternet. The kinds of information provided to support thisinclude a description of the historical background of Petra followed by adescription of the geography and location of the site, including the typeof soil found there. Works Cited"Lost Ancient of Petra." October 5, 2 8. The point of the site is to providehistorical/geographical/archaeological information on Petra to the average,non-scientific reader. Critique of an Archaeological Article The article I am critiquing is "Petra," located on the Internet athttp://www.raingod.com/angus/Gallery/Photos/MiddleEast/Jordan/Petra/. The site has several strengths. Ialso wonder why McIntyre does not address the prevalent theory on Petrathat it may be superimposed over an older site.
